How to compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB for an online form

Job, scholarship, passport and admission portals often accept only small files: 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB. Here is how to get under the limit and keep the document readable.

Make my PDF fit a size limit

Why your PDF is too big

Most PDFs are big because of pictures, not text. A scanned certificate or a page photographed with a phone is stored as a large, detailed image. One phone photo can be 3 to 5 MB on its own, while a page of typed text is usually only a few KB.

So the trick is to make the pictures smaller while keeping the words readable.

Steps

  1. Open PDF or photo under X KB.
  2. Pick the limit the portal asks for: 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 1 MB, or type your own number.
  3. Drop your PDF, Word file or photos.
  4. Download the file. Its size is shown, and it is under your limit.
  5. Open the downloaded file once and zoom in to check that names, numbers and seals can still be read.

PatraPDF first tries to keep text sharp and only shrinks the pictures. Pages are turned into pictures only if that is the only way to reach the limit.

If it still does not fit

Common size limits

What the portal asksWhat it usually means
Under 50 KBOne page, black and white
Under 100 KBOne or two clear pages
Under 200 KBA few pages, or one colour page
Under 1 MBMost documents with several pages

Questions

Will the text become blurry?

Typed text stays sharp in most cases, because PatraPDF shrinks pictures first. Very low limits for many scanned pages can make small print hard to read, so always open the result and check.

Is 1 MB the same as 1000 KB?

Portals differ: some count 1 MB as 1000 KB and some as 1024 KB. If you are close to the limit, aim a little lower, for example 950 KB for a 1 MB limit.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Open patrapdf.in/compress-pdf-to-kb in your phone's browser, pick the limit and choose the file.
