Exam photo and signature size: how to get it right the first time
Application forms for IBPS, SSC, UPSC, NEET, JEE and other exams are strict about the photo and signature. A wrong size means the upload fails, often on the last day. Here is what they check and how to fix it.

Pixels and KB are two different things
Forms usually ask for both, and mixing them up is the most common mistake.
- Pixels are the width and height of the picture, for example 200 × 230 pixels. This is about the shape and size on screen.
- KB is the file size, for example 20 to 50 KB. This is about how much space the file takes.
A photo can have the right pixels and still be too big in KB, or the right KB but the wrong shape. The form checks both.
Why there is a minimum size too
Many forms say "between 20 KB and 50 KB". A file that is too small is rejected just like one that is too big, because the portal assumes the picture is too poor to recognise you. PatraPDF's tool keeps the picture as clear as the limit allows, and if the file is still below the minimum, it adds invisible padding to the file without changing the picture.
What recent notices have asked for
These are values from recent notices, shown only as a guide. Always follow your own exam's official notice, because the numbers change from year to year.
| Exam | What is usually uploaded |
|---|---|
| IBPS (PO, Clerk, RRB) | Photo about 200 × 230 px, 20–50 KB; signature about 140 × 60 px, 10–20 KB; left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration |
| SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD) | Photo taken live with the camera during the form; signature uploaded as JPG, 10–20 KB |
| UPSC (CSE, NDA, CDS) | Photo uploaded and a live photo; signature signed three times, one below the other, on one image |
| NTA (NEET, JEE, CUET) | Passport-size photo (10–200 KB), signature, and for NEET a live photo and finger and thumb impressions |
Steps
- Open Exam photo & signature.
- Choose your exam and what you are uploading (photo, signature, thumb, declaration). The sizes are filled in, and you can change any number to match your notice.
- Drop the photo or a picture of your signature.
- Drag and zoom so your face (or the signature) fills the frame the way the form wants.
- For a signature on grey or lined paper, use Clean up to make it dark ink on white.
- Download the JPG and upload it to the form.
Photo checklist
- Recent photo, plain white or light background
- Face looking straight ahead, eyes open, both ears visible
- No cap or dark glasses; regular spectacles only if the notice allows them
- No shadows on the face or background, no blur
- Use the same photo everywhere for one exam (form, admit card, later stages)
Signature checklist
- Sign with a black or dark-blue pen on plain white paper (UPSC asks for black ink)
- Your normal running signature, not in capital letters
- For UPSC: sign three times, one below the other, and photograph all three together
- Photograph from straight above, in daylight, without your shadow on the paper
Questions
My photo is the right pixels but the form still rejects it. Why?
Check the KB range and the file type. Many forms accept only JPG or JPEG, and reject PNG or HEIC (the default on iPhones). The tool always saves a JPG within the KB range you set.
Can I use a selfie?
Only if it meets the rules: straight face, plain background, good light, nothing covering the face. A photo taken by someone else from about one metre away usually looks better.
Is my photo uploaded to PatraPDF?
No. The exam photo tool works in your browser; the photo stays on your phone or computer.
